Graphic Design is not Art

I am currently reading 'The Complete Graphic Designer" by Ryan Hembree. I find it a very informative and interesting book about graphic and visual communication - one of the basis for design - and I want to share with you guys what I learn in the book.

The first thing I learned in the book is that fine art and graphic design are two different things. But before that, I need to explain briefly what is graphic design.

Wikipedia define graphic design as "a number of artistic and professional disciplines which focus on visual communication and presentation" that requires one of more skills in "visual arts, typography, page layout, interface design, printmaking, chromatic (color theory)".

Fine Art
Graphic Design
- Subjective
- Objective
- Personally motivated and expressive
- A vocation / job
- Might explores social issues
- Created on behalf for a client
- Usually created for personal reason
- Address desires and needs of client

- Client is of higher priority

Here is an example of fine art, in the form of an illustration, Poem Illustration by ~SurrealisticPillow88:

Here is an example of graphic design, in terms of logo creation:

I hope there will be less people who mistake artist as designer and vice visa after reading this.
