Design and Color: Tints, Shades, Tones

In the next part of Design and Color, let us take a look at tints, shades and tones. Tonal value refers to how dark or light a hue is. A hue is referred to as any color found on the color wheel (thus, it is any color besides black, white, and gray).

The addition of white to a color (or hue) is referred to as tint. The addition of black is then referred to as shade. In some case, the addition of gray is referred to as tone. Having a hue that contains a lot of white is referred to as a light tone. The other two are mid-tone (contains an equal amount of black and white) and dark tone.

When it comes to painting, because black is a very strong tone, adding a bit of black is enough to make a dark shades. In contrast, because white is a weak tone, it is suggested to add a small drop of paint to the white paint to make very light tint.
