Interactivity and Digital Media (1)

There is always something inside me that is seeking to understand just what is Interactivity and Digital Media (IDM) ever since I am enrolled in NYP SIDM. After studying here for slightly more than half a year, I now have a rough idea of what IDM is.

To me, IDM is a marriage between the "Old World" and the "New World", where knowledge of things that has been here since ancient times (painting, furniture design, etc.) is merged with knowledge of things that was founded within this era (television, films, computers).

But within the "New World", there is also the traditional media (newspaper, poster, book, television, film, and anything that is analog) and digital media/new media (computer software, internet, video games, and anything digital).

IDM is currently considered a very young industry, thus the future of this industry might change rapidly depending on the market. And being a young industry, my knowledge of it too, is limited. However, I understand it is a mixture of knowledge and ideas from The Arts, Visual Communication and Design, Mass Communication and Information Technology.

Because of this, IDM practitioner have to be balanced in both brains (although it varies slightly depending on which job you take) where you must be able to understand art and design language as a medium while understanding and utilizing appropriate software and hardware for the job. Moreover, you must be equipped with communication skills to deliver correct content to a mass audience.
